In a nutshell: The first ceramic-on-metal total hip replacement system for patients with osteoarthritis has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. The approval was based on a 2 year RCT in which they found no clinical difference between this system and a metal-on-metal system. Lab testing by DePuy (manufacturers) showed a greater than 90% reduction in wear compared to a metal-on-metal system. With a 12% revision rate for metal-on-metal devices, this new system could help reduce readmission rates.
