In a nutshell:  An 18 member panel of experts have reported to the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that they saw little reason to recommend surgeons to continue to use metal-on-metal implants.  Regulators in the UK have advised that some patients with large diameter metal-on-metal joints should have a yearly blood test and MRI scan.
