In a nutshell: There has been a decline in 90-day mortality rates following total hip replacement for osteoarthritis in England and Wales between 2003 and 201. The research identifies factors associated with decreased or increased 90-day mortality. They suggest the following practices may account for the improvement after taking into account confounding factors: posterior surgical approach, mechanical and chemical prophylaxis, and spinal anaesthesia
