In a nutshell: This is the first full anatomical description of this ligament. It was first mentioned in 1879 as ‘a pearly band’. It connects the femur with the anterolateral tibia and they hypothesise that this controls internal tibial rotation, affecting the pivot shift phenomenon. Further research is needed but it might have implications for the treatment of anterior cruciate ligament tears.
