In a nutshell: There is a lack of evidence on the cost-effectiveness of alternative brands of prosthesis available for knee replacement. An economic analysis was made of the five most commonly-used brands. The cheapest brand was AGC Biomet, but Nexgen gave greater quality of life improvement and had the lowest rates of revision surgery. However, the data for the analysis was observational studies rather than from randomised controlled trials so confounding is a risk and the results need to be interpreted with caution.
